The Word – Day 1

June 10, 2012

“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” – Hebrews 4:12 NLT

The Word of God is alive! It’s not lifeless. It does not simply lie on a page and do nothing while the book containing it rests on a shelf or a side table.  John 1:14 says that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us in the form of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the embodiment and the fulfillment of the Word. Jesus is alive, so the Word must be alive. Proverbs 4:20-22 tells us the Word brings health and healing to our flesh, causing us to live. So not only is the Word alive, it brings life. It is not just alive for itself; it purposes to make us alive, too.

The Word of God is powerful! The original Greek word used here is energes – energetic, active, engaged in work. The Word of God is not passive. It is “front footed” and eager to see the job completed. It has energy and momentum. It’s always buzzing around and doing things. In John 11:43, Jesus calls Lazarus out of the death chamber with words alone. The Word is so powerful that it can cause dead people and things to live again.

The Word of God is sharp!  It cuts swiftly and precisely; even more so than a scalpel in a skilled surgeon’s hand. It separates the good stuff in us from the bad stuff in us. It makes the dividing line clear. The Word of God is never “clunky” in its endeavors; it’s never “just enough” to get the job done. It is more than sufficient. In fact, it is extravagant. The Word of God doesn’t cause collateral damage when it heals, either.  It is perfect for perfecting us – spirit, body and soul.

We must set our minds on the power and the ability of the Word of God in order to see it operate fully in our lives. We activate the Word by placing our faith in it and speaking it into our circumstances and situations and by declaring its many promises.

We can catch a revelation for what God purposes to do in our lives through the Word. The Holy Spirit can guide us as we read and meditate on scripture. When the Word begins to jump and sizzle in our hearts, we know we’ve found the true Word – alive, powerful and sharp!
