#73: How to Treat People You Disciple

March 5, 2022

We talk about the dos and don’ts of discipleship all the time, but what about the *heart* of discipleship?

In this episode of the Positioned to Prosper podcast, Erica is sharing a message she preached recently at her home church, REVIVE Church of Tampa, about the heart we should have when we disciple people.

Many try to approach discipleship like corporate business training with a litany of 101, 201 and 301 classes designed to “qualify” a person for service in the house of God. But real discipleship requires real relationship. The best discipleship happens in a family context and looks like apprenticeship. Is this the sort of discipleship you are experiencing?

We’ll be looking at six different qualities of the heart of God that we definitely must embrace as we seek to train up disciples to follow Christ and obey his commands. Are you ready to jump in? Then grab your Bible, your journal and a pen, and . . . Let’s Go!

Scripture References mentioned in this episode:

Matthew 18:12-14 —
For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

2 Peter 3:9 —
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Philippians 2:5-8 —
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

John 13:3-5 —
Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
