#122: Competing Priorities

March 4, 2023

Let’s talk about the stress competing priorities can bring.

It’s the worst, right? You just want to do the things you’re meant to do. You want to run your race well. But then . . . you find yourself with overwhelming handfuls of responsibilities and tasks — ALL which feel vital and MANY that are competing for the limited time, resources and energy you have. What do you do?

For many of us, this is right where we get taken out with overwhelm. We settle for the approach that says, “Well, I’ll just do the best I can. It can’t all get done. So let me just get done what I can.” Has there ever been a more self-defeating cadence of words to speak over yourself? You’re prophesying your failure before you even get started!

Listen, the problem isn’t that you’re not equal to the task of doing all you were made to do. The mistake made is in believing that every single thing that presents itself to you with urgency is something you were made and assigned to do! And there’s also some breakdown in the process by which we prioritize the things we were actually made and assigned to do. The lack of clarity when it comes to priorities is wearing us down!

Do you want to know what the Biblical standard for prioritizing responsibilities is? Do you want to learn how to diffuse a lot of the stress and anxiety that comes from competing priorities in your life? If your answer is yes, then this week’s episode is for you! Grab your Bible, your journal and your pen, and . . . Let’s Go!

Scripture References Mentioned in This Episode:

Matthew 22:34-40
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Galatians 6:9-10
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Colossians 3:17
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Matthew 6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

2 Corinthians 5:7
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
