Do you remember that book, Boundaries, by Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend? Have you ever read it?
I did, back in the 90’s while I was in counseling and also participating in a recovery group at my local church. I grew up in a family that really didn’t have great boundaries — we were fairly enmeshed — and I’m betting that many who will listen to this episode could say, “Me, too.”
Codependency and lack of healthy boundaries is a fairly common story when it comes to the majority of families in the “westernized” world. So, where did all the talk about codependency and boundaries go lately?
I don’t think it actually went anywhere; I think it just morphed. I think we learned how to control it some, we learned how to “Christianize” it as it came into churches unhealed, and I think we allowed it to shape shift into justifiable blame in some situations.
In this episode we’ll be picking that conversation back up. What’s “new” with codependency and boundaries, and what the heck are long runways? And how can I show up to my relationships better, as I learn how to set healthy boundaries and navigate long runways?
If you’re okay with getting a little uncomfortable so you can get a little bit healed and a lot more powerful in your relationships, I want you to stick around for this episode. Grab your journal and a pen, and . . . Let’s Go!
What you will learn in this episode:
- A quick reminder of the definition of codependency, what types of relationships tend to attract it, and what it looks like in real life relationships;
- What healthy boundaries look like, what their God-intended purpose is and how Jesus used boundaries; and
- What a “long runway” is when it comes to working through conflict and negotiation in relationships and how boundaries and long runways can work together to result in growth and progress in relationships.
