The Word – Day 4

June 10, 2012

“who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power…” – Hebrews 1:3a NKJV

This scripture tells us Jesus upholds all things by the word of his power. Note that it doesn’t say he upholds all things by his power directly. It says he upholds them by the word of his power. The vehicle God uses to sustain things is a word.

The most powerful tool we have to uphold things in our lives is a word. Proverbs 18:21 tells us that death and life are in the power of the tongue. The words we articulate will either cause things to grow and live, or shrivel and die. Jesus killed a fig tree simply by using his words. He also raised Lazarus from the dead by using just words. Words are incredibly powerful, especially when they are the inspired and anointed Words of God.

Colossians 1:15-17 says that through the living Logos – Jesus Christ – all things were created, visible and invisible, and all things in creation are held together by him. Jesus is a Living Word. He is the ever proceeding Word that comes from the mouth of God. And part of his job as the Word is to create and sustain life.

We have the same DNA as Christ. When we were born again we became co-heirs with him to the glorious riches that God has for us, and we were also born into a process of regeneration. The Bible says we are becoming more and more like Christ as our journey with him goes on (2 Corinthians 3:18). As we become more and more like him, our ability to wield the Word to create and sustain becomes stronger, too. The most powerful tool we have to make things around us grow and live is the Word. As we speak in line with what the Word says, we will see circumstances and situations shift. We will see things come into order and begin to grow and thrive in accordance with the will of God. What words will you speak today?
