What do you think about the holistic approach to health?
How about when you compare it to the modern, “western” approach to health care we’ve become standardized to these days? And let me ask you this . . .
If you’re a Christian — a follower of Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit — which do you believe is more aligned with Scripture and the will of God as an approach to healing and stewarding health well?
Uh-oh! Did I press a button? For many, I know that I’m most certainly pressing a button. I’ve spent the last seven years as a certified, holistic health coach and teacher of God’s word really digging into this conflict between the two approaches as I’ve observed the conversation (or the lack of conversation) inside the Church. I’ve also spent lots of time digging into the Bible to see what God’s word has to say about how to approach the practical aspects of healing and stewarding health. So where did I come out on this question myself?
That’s exactly what we’re getting into on this episode of The Positioned to Prosper podcast. If you’re willing to wade into these waters with me, let’s start lining up these options with what the Bible says as we endeavor to see if we can find the Holy in the midst of the holistic health approach. So, go grab your Bible, your journal and a pen, and . . . Let’s Go!
Scripture References mentioned in this episode:
Exodus 15:26 —
“If you will diligently listen to the voice of the LORD your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, your healer.”
1 Peter 2:24 —
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Proverbs 3:1-2 —
My son, do not forget my teaching,
but let your heart keep my commandments,
for length of days and years of life
and peace they will add to you.
Romans 11:13-16 —
Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them. For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead? If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches.
Isaiah 2:2-3 —
It shall come to pass in the latter days
that the mountain of the house of the Lord
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
and shall be lifted up above the hills;
and all the nations shall flow to it,
and many peoples shall come, and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
and that we may walk in his paths.”
1 Samuel 13:13-14 —
And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 —
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Proverbs 26:2 —
Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, a curse that is causeless does not alight.
Numbers 14:18 —
‘The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’
Exodus 20:4-6 —
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands[b] of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Revelation 18:21-24 —
Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So will Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence, and will be found no more; and the sound of harpists and musicians, of flute players and trumpeters, will be heard in you no more,
and a craftsman of any craft will be found in you no more, and the sound of the mill will be heard in you no more, and the light of a lamp will shine in you no more, and the voice of bridegroom and bride will be heard in you no more, for your merchants were the great ones of the earth,
and all nations were deceived by your sorcery [pharmakeia]. And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on earth.”
Ezekiel 47:12 —
“And on the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing.”
Revelation 22:2 —
Also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
1 Corinthians 11:29-30 —
For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.
